Alex Pullen somehow managed to break through exam week and she’ll be joining us in New Orleans.

That brings our total to 25 — which I think is a new record for this trip.  Welcome, Alex!

Departure Details

Friday, May 7
Fred should have the trailer at church by 5:00 pm. If you items for the trailer, this is the best time to bring them. The trailer is a great place for sleeping bags, work boots and other items you won’t need until you arrive in New Orleans. Lynn could use a hand packing food on Friday afternoon. Contact her or porst a comment if you can help.

Saturday, May 8
Please plan to be at GPUMC at 6:00 a.m. EDT to assemble for departure. See the travel page for ride arrangements.
If you have items Saturday morning for the trailer, be at church promptly at 6:00 am, because the Fredmobile leaves shortly after 6:00 am.
I am still missing paper work for a number of people. Email me and I will send you the link to the download page. You will find the volunteer packet and the current roster.
The only paperwork I need is the Waiver of Liability and Medical Insurance form.  Download it. Fill it out. Fax it to me at 313-824-5062 or deliver to the church VIM mailbox during business hours. Call me if you need to drop it off at my home. My goal is to distribute copies of the form for each vehicle so medical information is handy during the trip.
I will be traveling from Bloomington, Indiana on Saturday to Dyersburg, TN.  I will meet the Kate See group coming from Chicago. They will be staying with Emily’s grandmother, and we’ll travel to New Orleans together from there.

Missing some paperwork from team members.  Check your email. You know who you are.

Please call or send me a message to confirm whether or not you need UMCOR accident insurance.

Thanks.

Jon Lorenz has been added to the trip roster. An experienced GPUMC Workcamper, Jon will be another great addition to our youth crew.

He will be traveling to New Orleans and back in Dan Driscoll’s vehicle.

Welcome to the team!

AND .. Check the Travel page for the hotel information on the way down.  Make your own reservations. BR

Check the travel page for car assignments and itineraries.  If you are missing from the page, sorry!  Please comment and we’ll get  you into the plan.

Britt Baubie will recommend a hotel for us on the way down.  NO RESERVATIONS HAVE BEEN MADE.
If you plan on staying there, please make reservations for yourself.  Choose roommates to split costs. Each traveler is responsible for his/her own lodging and meals on the way to and from New Orleans.

He will also recommend a hotel for the return trip. AGAIN. WE ARE NOT MAKING ANY RESERVATIONS FOR THE GROUP.

Watch here for an update.

Don’t forget our March 24 Meal and Meat session in Fellowship Hall. 6:00 pm.  Art is making Jambalaya, Lynn is bringing beverages, I’ll bring something. You are welcome to offer something to the group.

Also… please note the new, direct domain name for this blog:  gpumcvim.org.  It’s short. It says it all. Share it with others who want to follow our trip south.

Doug Cordier and Ed Glotfelty know EXACTLY how. They’ve done it for 5 years.

Doug just posted the recipe on his blog — good reading for anyone with taste buds.

We are leaving for our fifth annual Volunteers in Mission trip to New Orleans on May 8, 2010. We will return to GP on Sunday May 16.

Some of the mission team will be joining the group in New Orleans — traveling from college graduations, work and other places from around the midwest. But we’ll all gather at Aurora United Methodist Church in Algiers, on the West Bank of the Mississippi for five days of rebuilding May 10 – 14.

You can RSVP on our Facebook event page — or leave a comment here.  More news, volunteer information and photos will come soon, so bookmark this page or add it to your RSS feeds.  Thanks.

Saturday at 6 pm there were 51 desserts, a whole lot of pig and gumbo, but now what counts is the $8,500 the congregation donated to help our VIM reconstruction in New Orleans, the UMCOR mission to Haiti, and the ongoing missions of GPUMC.

Thank you everyone.

Masked children enjoying Gumbopalooza

Children get the Mardi Gras spirit at Gumbopalooza '09

Gumbopalooza has become a great family-friendly event in the life of our church. The menu has great choices for children — and come on, who better to appreciate a giant chocolaty confection than a 12-year old? In fact, we know there will be a few desserts that are likely to inspire some very tense bidding among our younger guests. One of the great moments of Gumbopalooza 2009 was the bidding war between one girl and a table full of boys who were trying to pool their funds to keep their bid alive.

Please come. Bring your family and family friends. Leave a comment or call the church office to reserve your spots: (313) 886-2363.
